Austenland by Shannon Hale

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Austenland is a Regency-inspired English resort located in Pembrook Park, Kent, England that caters to “Austen-crazed women”. Among these women is Jane Hayes, a thirtysomething woman who is unlucky in love due to her obsession with all things Austen especially Mr. Darcy. Upon her aunt’s death, She receives a paid trip package to Austenland. Will this Austenland trip be the antidote to cure her Austen obssession or Will Jane end up with “a Darcy of her own.”?
The highlights are of this book are:
.the Austenland experience which is 3weeks in Regency-era immersion.
. Great-Aunt Carolyn’s advice about real love.
. Jane and Molly’s friendship.
. Jane and Henry’s interactions
The discussion about class differences still relevant today.
The lead trio, Jane Henry, and Martin had more character development.
Jane’s list of boyfriends are time markers of her personal growth.
Aunt Saffronia is the most memorable side character.
The concept of finding “something real” among the fantasy of Austenland.
All the references to Austen’s books (Persuasion, Mansfield Park, Sense & Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice).
Jane’s self-portrait.
Lowlights: The attempted harassment of Jane by Sir Templeton at Austenland.
The piano scene of Peter Peter Pumpkin eater was okay but not memorable.
