Fate: The Winx Saga could’ve worked as its own show.

When I first heard the announcement for this adaptation, I was intrigued since a live-action Winx Club could work if the series leaned into the fantasy aspect. Netflix could’ve even marketed this as a fantasy drama. But alas, I began to feel skeptical after the official trailer came out. Instead of the series being lighthearted and focusing on the girls’ friendship, The show is gloomy and too melodramatic. The drama and conflict come across as unnecessary and forced (i.e. the love triangle between Bloom, Sky, and Stella).

The girls’ friendship is non-existent until the end. The world of the show seems generic and bland unlike the cartoon where the world was colorful and fantastical. The show lacks personality and doesn’t stand out from all the other Netflix drama shows.

A couple missed opportunities are the fashion and the cast.

The fashion could’ve been a throwback to either early or late 00’s. Pop culture references from the 2000’s could still be used since a handful survive through memes. Just pick and choose.

The WInx Club has been praised for its “natural” diversity.

It’s a huge shame that Asian and Latina actresses weren’t picked for Musa and Flora. The studio should’ve stuck to their guns and hired POC actresses.

If Flora wasn’t going to appear in the show, her character should’ve been replaced with a new character unrelated to her.

Do I think this show has the potential to be successful?

Maybe. With show renewed for a second season, I’d want to see an engaging plot, expanded world-building, and more emphasis on the growth/ development on the individual girls and their friendship. I’ll stop watching after 3 episodes if I get bored.
